Linguistic Software


FLEx - FieldWorks Language Explorer

FieldWorks or FLEx consists of software tools that help you manage linguistic and cultural data. It is particularly suited to making dictionaries.

Toolbox (The Field Linguist's Toolbox)

Toolbox is a data management and analysis tool for field linguists. It is especially useful for maintaining lexical data, and for parsing and interlinearizing text, but it can be used to manage virtually any kind of data.

Lexique Pro

Lexique Pro is an interactive lexicon viewer and editor, with hyperlinks between entries, category views, dictionary reversal, search, and export tools. It's designed to display your data in a user-friendly format so you can distribute it to others.


Other Unicode-Aware Software


Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office 2003 and later versions for Windows support Urdu and Sindhi based Unicode fonts. It may be necessary to upgrade your version of Uniscribe (USP10.dll) to a recent version (at least 1.626.6001.18000 which comes with Vista). Currently, the Apple Mac version does not properly support these fonts. MS Office may be purchased from www.microsoft.com.

OpenOffice

OpenOffice is a free and cross-platform productivity suite that supports Urdu and Sindhi based Unicode fonts. It may be necessary to upgrade your version of Uniscribe (USP10.dll) to a recent version (at least 1.626.6001.18000 which comes with Vista). MicroSoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC)

Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC) is a free program which facilitates creating custom language keyboards for Microsoft Windows. They may be packaged for easy distribution and installation.

MS VOLT

The Microsoft Visual OpenType Layout Tool provides an easy-to-use interface to add OpenType layout tables to fonts with TrueType outlines. It is licensed for free and can be downloaded from the online community set up for it.

An OpenType Naskh font suitable for writing Urdu and other Urdu-script based languages

An OpenType Naskh font suitable for writing Sindhi and other Sindhi-script based languages

Jameel Noori Nastaliq

An OpenType Nastaliq font suitable for writing Urdu

Nafees Noori Nastaleeq

An OpenType Nastaliq font suitable for writing Urdu

Noto Nastaliq

An OpenType Nastaliq font suitable for writing Urdu and other Urdu-script based languages

Awami Nastaliq

This is a Graphite font. It works in LibreOffice, FireFox, FLEx, XeTeX and Paratext but will not work in Microsoft products such as Office.


MS Keyboards for Writing Urdu and Sindhi Script


Urdu Phonetic Keyboard

This keyboard is used to type the languages that use an Urdu-based Nastaleeq or Naskh script. These include Urdu, Balochi, Punjabi, Marwari, and Saraiki, etc.

Sindhi Phonetic Keyboard

This keyboard is used to type in various languages of the Sindh that use the Sindhi script. These include Sindhi, Dhatki, Parkari, Kachi Koli, Tharadari, Marwari, Oadki, and Wadiyari etc.

IPA Phonetic Keyboard for Languages of Southern Pakistan

This keyboard is used to type the International Phonetic Alphabet representation for the pronunciation of words in the languages of Pakistan.

IPA Pak Times IPA Keyboard for Languages of Southern Pakistan

This keyboard is used to type a traditional romanized representation for the pronunciation of words in the languages of Pakistan. This is not the same as Roman Urdu, which may be typed with a regular English keyboard.
